Newly-elected Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles (R-TN-05) voted against Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-20) to serve as Speaker of the House.
Twice now, McCarthy failed to secure enough votes to become the chamber’s next speaker.
Ogles instead voted for Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH-04) to serve as House Speaker. In the first round of voting, Ogles was joined by Representatives Lauren Boebert (R-CO-03), Michael Cloud (R-TX-26), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL-13), Mary Miller (R-IL-15), and Keith Self (R-TX-03) in voting for Jordan, according to Townhall.
During the second round of voting, Ogles – along with Boebert, Cloud, Luna, Miller, and Self – was joined in voting for Jordan by Representatives Andy Biggs (R-AZ-05), Dan Bishop (R-NC-08), Josh Brecheen (R-OK-02), Andrew Clyde (R-GA-09), Eli Crane (R-AZ-02), Matt Gaetz (R-FL-01), Bob Good (R-PA-05), Paul Gosar (R-AZ-04), Andy Harris (R-MD-01), Ralph Norman (R-SC-05), Scott Perry (R-CA-04), Matt Rosendale (R-MT), and Chip Roy (R-TX-21).
Ogles indicated his vote would be against McCarthy earlier this week when he joined a group of House Republicans in sending a letter to McCarthy, calling his responses to their pre-election demands “insufficient.”
🚨 Almost 10 House Republicans who haven’t said how they plan to vote on Jan. 3 write in new letter: “Despite some progress achieved, Mr. McCarthy’s statement comes almost impossibly late to address continued deficiencies ahead of the opening of the 118th Congress on January 3rd” pic.twitter.com/hTaPfb37Vi

The letter sent to McCarthy ahead of the speakership vote read, “The times call for radical departure from the status quo — not a continuation of past and ongoing Republican failures. For someone with a 14-year presence in senior House Republican leadership, Mr. McCarthy bears squarely the burden to correct the dysfunction he now explicitly admits across that long tenure.”
The first and second rounds of voting saw McCarthy gather a total of 203 votes – which fell short of the 218 votes necessary to win the speaker’s race. The rounds saw Democrat Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY-08), the incoming House Democratic leader, win nine more votes than McCarthy.
House Speaker SECOND round of voting is over and still no candidate has a majority:
McCarthy (R) 203
Jeffries (D) 212
Jordan (R) 19: Biggs, Bishop, Boebert, Brecheen, Cloud, Clyde, Crane, Gaetz, Good, Gosar, Harris, Luna, Miller, Norman, Ogles, Perry, Rosendale, Roy & Self. pic.twitter.com/lnZbox0A1H— Craig Caplan (@CraigCaplan) January 3, 2023
On Twitter, Jeffries called the Republican voting situation “complete chaos.”
Day One.
House Dems are united and ready to get to work.
Complete chaos on the other side of the aisle.

John Rose is falling in line with the establishment. I agree with how he votes 90% of the time but he apparently has become part of the swamp.
You’re kidding Joe, right? After four years John Rose has an almost perfect conservative Heritage score of 99% and you detect John being part of the swamp? I think your swamp detector is in need of recalibration.
good. mcarthy is a class A swamp creature.
like the Turtle Mitch
Color me surprised, I didn’t think Andy had even shown up. Kevin’s roommate was there showing his support.
MTG has been a huge disappointment, but she’s better used as a bludgeon rather than an eloquent debater.
Indeed Mark, just goes to show that just because Andy failed to show up for his two campaigns doesn’t mean that he won’t show up and do the right things in the House. Elections matter and thank goodness the voters of the Fifth elected Andy.
Yes, Mr. Knofler, I have been disappointed with MTG too. The problem, as I see it, is that most people do not go to Congress/Washington to change it, but to join it. I now see that MTG is one of these. People talk about term limits, but more than term limits, I think that what is most needed is Federal Recall for Federal Elected Officials. A guy runs for Federal Office, lies and is elected–after he then betrays the voters and reneges on his promises, he says to them, I am here for the next two/six years, what are you going to do about it? Federal recall of elected Federal Officials would go a long way toward fixing THAT problem!
I think Jim Jordon would be a great speaker! He holds people accountable and speaks up for the American people. He needs to Step Up and Run!!!
Not only is he not running Amber, he has said he doesn’t want the job and is supporting McCarthy (Heritage-53%).
A great start for Rep. Ogles. Apparently the rest of Tennessee Republicans are in favor of “a continuation of past and ongoing Republican failures”. What kind of RINO leverage do Turtle Mitch & McCarthy have over our more “seasoned” reps?
I like leaders who act out of conviction, and not just convenience. Looks like Rep. Ogles is the kind of guy who takes a stand, and then stays there!
At least to the 12th vote…
